Four Elms

We are dedicated to investing in the next generation of circus talent through our structured traineeship and community education programme based in our home town of Cardiff.

Our search for a permanent home within the city started back in 2004. It continued in vain until 2009, when we found the Four Elms Schoolrooms in the heart of Adamsdown - the community where our founder members originally started the company in 1986.

The 19th century Grade II listed building was in dire need of complete renovation. Stained glass windows had to be replaced, rotten floorboards repaired and crumbling plaster restored before we could even think about installing showers, an antique fireplace and the custom built circus rig within the main hall. Thanks to architect Kevin Sutton at Davies Sutton and the R & M Williams building team, our dreams of a dedicated permanent circus space in the heart of Cardiff were realised.

Our new home will give us the space and security to continue our creative and community work, and will serve as a hub for innovation in the heart of the Cardiff community. The purpose-built rig in our main space will allow performers and professionals to train and create, teachers to pass on their skills and fresh talent to be showcased in a beautifully restored environment.

NoFit State is now part of the Up and Out network, and Four Elms is available to successful applicants seeking support for their projects. Up and Out is a collaborative network of creative organisations across the UK committed to supporting the creation and development of work in the circus and street arts sectors. Additionally the network supports cross-over work between these genres and other areas of performing arts.
