NoFit State Circus and Crying Out Loud announce the launch of Spotlight UK Circus
Taking the best of British contemporary circus to the European marketplace
On Thursday 1 December, leading contemporary circus company NoFit State and creative producers Crying Out Loud launch Spotlight UK Circus, a new showcase to promote British contemporary circus artists to an international marketplace.
UK-based artists and companies are invited to apply for the opportunity to participate, perform and pitch at three European performance festivals: CIRCA festival du cirque actuel in Auch, France in October 2017; Subcase Subtopia Circus Fair in Stockholm, Sweden in November 2017; and Festival OFF d’Avignon, France in July 2018.
The selection panel will nominate up to ten artists or companies and the final selection will be made by the individual festivals. The panel includes Adrian Berry (Jacksons Lane), Angus MacKechnie (ISAN), Kate Hartoch (Bristol Circus City), Rachel Clare (Crying Out Loud) and Tom Rack (NoFit State Circus).
Supported by Arts Council England’s International Showcasing fund, the initiative aims to increase the profile of home-grown contemporary circus on the international scene and to increase the capacity and ability of British contemporary circus companies to promote themselves and tour internationally.
British contemporary circus is at a critical stage of development with a recent surge in the quantity and quality of British producing companies. There is now a body of companies ready to make the next step into the international arena, to improve financial resilience and sustainability, raise profile and reach new audiences.
NoFit State’s founder director Tom Rack says:”NoFit State is one of the UK's leading contemporary circus companies, celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. Beyond creating shows that travel across the globe, we feel we have an important role play within the UK sector in inspiring, nurturing and facilitating the creation and circulation of great circus. We have always encouraged and supported the development of new talents at home, and to now take fresh and exciting UK work into the world to international platforms is a seriously exciting prospect.”
Crying Out Loud’s artistic director Rachel Clare says: “Spotlight UK Circus is an excellent new opportunity for UK-based circus artists to develop professionally by performing their work overseas on new platforms. Crying Out Loud has been forging international partnerships for 14 years and is delighted to join forces with NoFit State and is hugely grateful to Arts Council England who initiated the International Showcase fund.”
The deadline for applications is Friday 30 December.
